  • Leave the pump alone until the area is safe.Once it’s dry and safe, check for a tripped breaker or outage, or call a plumber.
  • Cut down on water going into the pit.Hold off on laundry and long showers if drains empty into the pit.
  • Move belongings off wet floors.Only if you can do it without walking through water near electrical.

Why sump pumps fail

Knowing the cause helps your plumber and your insurance claim.

Power outages

Storms knock out power exactly when the pump is needed most. A battery backup helps.

Stuck float switch

The float gets caught on the pit wall or cord, and the pump never turns on.

Clogged or frozen discharge line

The pump runs, but the water has nowhere to go.

Worn-out motor

Pumps don’t last forever. Know how old yours is.

More water than it can handle

Very heavy rain can outpace a pump that’s working fine.

Tripped breaker or GFCI

Sometimes it’s as simple as power to the outlet.

What we do

How we handle sump pump water

Most sump pump losses we see are in finished basements, so drying is about carpet, pad and the bottom of walls.

  1. Map the wet area

Carpet, walls, stored items and the rooms next door.

  2. Extract the water

    From carpet, pad and concrete.

  3. Pull back carpet, remove pad

So air can reach the floor underneath.

  4. Check the walls

Readings at the bottom of every wall; drywall cut only when needed.

  5. Dry and dehumidify

Equipment adjusted as readings come down.

  6. Document cause and damage

Photos of the pit and pump, readings and notes for your claim.

Insurance

Sump pump failures and insurance

Sump pump overflow is often excluded from standard homeowners policies unless you’ve added a specific endorsement.

  • Call your agent to ask what your policy says.
  • We document the pit, pump, damage and drying.
  • We prepare restoration estimates where appropriate and work with your adjuster.

Your insurer decides what’s covered. Good documentation helps either way.

Common questions

Straight answers. If your situation is different, call and describe it.

My sump pump failed. What should I do first?

Stay out of the water if it’s near anything electrical, and don’t work on the pump while standing in water. Take photos, move what you can safely reach and call us. Once it’s safe, a plumber can get the pump running again.

Is sump pump failure covered by insurance?

It depends on your policy. Sump pump overflow often requires a specific endorsement. Your insurer decides.

How can I tell if my sump pump is working?

Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch the pump turn on and shut off. Do this before storm season.

How long does a sump pump last?

Many last somewhere around eight to ten years, depending on use. Know your pump’s age and replace it before it fails.

Can the carpet be saved?

Often, if the water was clean and drying starts quickly. The pad is commonly replaced.
