Water Damage Restoration in Merriam, KS

Much of Merriam’s housing dates from the 1950s and 1960s, and most of the water damage we see starts inside those homes: older water heaters, supply lines and drain plumbing that finally give out, plus some basement seepage. We find where the water went, dry it properly and document it for your insurance company.

Do this first

If water is in your home now

The first few minutes are about staying safe and limiting the spread.

  • Keep clear of outlets, cords and the panel.Water and electricity don’t mix. If anything plugged in is near the water, stay out and call before touching anything electrical.
  • Stop the water at the valve, if you safely can. Most homes have a main shutoff where the water line comes in, and toilets, sinks and washers have their own.
  • Don’t handle water that could be contaminated. If it came in from outside or from a floor drain or toilet bowl, keep your hands off it.
  • Document before you clean up.Photos and short videos of every wet room help your insurance claim later.
  • If outside water got into the house, don’t try to clean it up yourself.Water from outside may be contaminated. Keep everyone out of it and call for advice.

Then call Blue Valley at (913) 395-8488. We will ask a few questions and tell you what happens next.

Our process

What Blue Valley does when we get there

In an older Merriam home, we measure first, so we remove only what has to go.

  1. 01

    Inspect

Water travels under flooring and down walls, so we map every wet area first.

  2. 02

    Extract

Extraction pulls the bulk water out of floors, carpet and pad.

  3. 03

    Dry

Drying equipment placed for the room, the materials and the amount of water.

  4. 04

    Document

Readings and photos from the first visit until materials are dry.

  5. 05

    Restore

Help with drywall, flooring and trim once it’s confirmed dry.

Local know-how

Water damage in Merriam homes: what we commonly see

Merriam has ranches, split-levels and modest two-stories on mature, tree-lined streets, mostly in ZIP codes 66202 and 66203. This is what we commonly see on our jobs, not a rule for every street.

Mid-century basements

Homes of this age commonly see basement seepage through block walls after heavy rain, and water around floor drains during storms. Finished basements added later raise the stakes, because seepage now reaches carpet and drywall.

Older water heaters and plumbing

Water heaters, supply lines and drains that have been in place for decades are frequent failure points. A slow leak can soak the bottom of walls before anyone notices.

Split-levels

Lower levels sit partly below grade and can collect water from downspouts and grading that slopes toward the house.

Mature trees

Leaves clog gutters and window wells in the fall, sending more water toward the foundation.

Finding hidden moisture

A moisture meter shows what’s wet inside walls and under flooring, even when the surface looks fine.

Water damage questions from Merriam homeowners

Straight answers. If your situation is different, call and describe it.

Is outside water handled differently from a pipe leak?

Yes. Water from a supply line is clean when it starts. Water that comes in from outside can carry contaminants, so it shouldn’t be handled without protection. Call and describe it, and we will tell you what we can help with.

My split-level’s lower level gets wet after heavy rain. Why?

Lower levels that sit partly below grade collect water from saturated soil, short downspouts and grading that slopes toward the house. A drainage contractor can address the cause. We dry what got wet and document it.

How do I know if my water heater is leaking?

Look for water around the base, rust at the bottom of the tank or damp carpet and baseboards nearby. If it’s leaking, shut off the water supply to the tank if you can safely reach the valve, and call a plumber.

Does homeowners insurance cover a slow leak?

Many policies cover sudden, accidental leaks but exclude long-term leaks and wear. Your insurer decides. We document the damage and what we find about the cause.

Can wet drywall be saved?

Sometimes. If clean water reached it and it hasn’t swollen or softened, it can often be dried in place. Drywall with wet insulation behind it usually needs to be cut so the cavity can dry.
